The Jack Highland Terrier is a hybrid which results from the breeding of a Jack Russell Terrier and a West Highland White Terrier. The dog came from an idea of John (Jack) Russell who took a “Trump” which looked like a Wire Fox Terrier but the legs were shorter and developed it. The “Trump”, a dog from which JRT was developed, is thought to have been a crossbreed between Black Tan Terrier and a Fox Terrier.
The Jack Russell Terrier was used in England to hunt foxes. Hunters need a completely white dog to avoid accidentally shooting their dog during the chaos of a fox hunt. In the 1800s, this problem prompted a man named Parson Russell to create the Jack Russell terrier breed. The breed was eventually brought to the United States sometime in the 1930s.
The Jack Russell terrier hound mix is similar to the Chihuahua in looks. Their coat is shorter and thicker than the Chihuahua’s and the husky looks like a dog from another planet. They are generally white with white markings. They weigh from eight to 15 pounds and have curly tails. A Jack Russell terrier hound mix can live for 13 to 18 years.
