Heroes 3 is more complete in general. Heroes 4 was made when 3DO was having a lot of financial troubles so they had budget cuts and the game was released in a beta state. H4 has some interesting ideas like the magic & skill system, which I liked. But the problem is the heroes. Heroes in H4 is more like RPG.

The gog version with HD mod is much better. The first RoE campaign is designed to be very easy, as it is a tutorial campaign. The mercenaries campaign is also relatively easy, the others should be fairly interesting for an intermediate player. Overall RoE are the easiest campaigns. SoD and AB campaigns are more challenging.
